Sonar is the dynamic duo of Dirk Ivens (head honcho of Dive and the Daft Records label) and Patrick Stevens (HYPNOSKULL), so you know this is a fine and challenging recording before even letting it spin. "Overdose Simulation" is their second full-length CD after a small score of (extremely hard to find) vinyl releases. It broke into the techno-rave market in both Europe and Japan, setting a precedent for this new genre of power-electro dance music. Minimalistic pile-driver rhythms is the key to Sonar's sound, laced up with threads of expressive static noise. On this release, Sonar gives a large tip-of-the-hat to the classic old school industrial sound of Spain's Esplendor Geometrico by adopting some of their percussion and making it entirely their own. Sonar presents us with 11 tracks of pure rhythm: mostly dancefloor hits, but with a few inside-your-head tracks to keep things interesting, including two exclusive remix versions of Headweak and Shotgun. Overdose Simulation represents one of the most powerful moments in the power-electro movement to date. Ahead of it's time in both minimal musical styling and texture, Sonar sets the mark for all acts to follow.
